Drunk Plan with Me

Today is my last day at my full-time "real person" job and what better way to jump into the crazy world of self-employment by posting a video about getting drunk and planning? For a while now I've toyed around with the idea of taking my regular plan with me videos, and adding a twist to it, just to see what would happen. A few of my very best guy friends were up for the challenge and the date was set.

Honestly the worst part about filming this video was the drinking. I'm not a big fan of it to begin with, but it was kind of a very vital part to the entire video. The guys were super helpful in the process and just hung out until we were good and ready to start. And I can't believe how much fun it was.

I loved seeing how the guys approached planning as they've definitely never done anything like this before. I knew Alex would have a rough go at it, but it was hilarious to see just how hard it was for him to plan out his thoughts and days. We're the exact opposite when it comes to planning and you an definitely see that. Chad seemed to really get on with it and Azmi was just there for the ride.

I know this type of thing isn't for everyone and if you're at all hesitant about the entire thing, don't watch it. It's definitely not a get wasted and do stupid things on the internet type of video (we're adults and not underage idiots), but I can understand this not being everyone's cup of tea. I just really enjoyed spending time with the guys not talking about comic books for once. I had home court advantage and I think they were some really great sports about the whole thing.

Would you like to see more videos like this in the future?

Ipsy Glam Bag | July 2015

You know it might be time to cancel a subscription when you weren't overly eager to rip the package open when it arrived on your doorstep. I definitely wasn't feeling the excitement this month and for good reason. It kind of sucks.

For one I hate when the bag they give ever month doesn't open from the top. This sort of down the side business just annoys me for some reason and I know I definitely won't be reusing the bag in the future. None of the products are really me either. The eye shadow quad looked tempting, but the consistency and pigmentation just left something to be desired. HD powder just isn't my cup of tea and chap sticks for some reason give me the heeby jeebies. I couldn't explain to you why, they just make me feel gross touching them.

The only thing that could remotely save this subscription is the Read My Lips Lipstick. It's in a cool package and seems pigmented enough. Sigh. It may be time to say goodbye to Ipsy again and save that $10 for more planner stickers. You know, because I need them.

What would you do? Cancel or give it another month?

#AKBwedding: Asking My Bridesmaids

Now that my four lovely bridesmaids have all been asked to be in the #AKBwedding, I can finally share with you all how I asked them. I've been plotting how I would ask them since before I got engaged and the irony does not escape me. I wanted to ask my bridesmaids the same exact way I ended up getting asked myself: with a subscription-esque box. Classic.

I wanted the box to reflect everything I love while tying it all together in a wonderful wedding theme. There's beauty bits, lifestyle bits, stickers, and of course a bit of candy. Literally all the parts that make up a Kayla. There's even a nail polish in the navy of our wedding colors for them to wear on the wedding day and a bridesmaid button to wear at the bachelorette party. The perfect little kit for anyone in a wedding if I do say so myself.

I can't wait to go dress shopping with two of my bridesmaids this weekend. It's always a challenge to get them all together, but it's going to be an amazing time with a few happy tears shed I'm sure.

How did you ask your bridesmaids to be in your wedding? What would you do if you aren't married?

Plan with Me | County Fair Theme

I'm in love with this layout. I feel like I've been hording the County Fair Darice sticker book for weeks waiting for the perfect time. This week it felt right. I love how the July red combined with the August green and yellow for this perfectly bright, cheery layout.

It feels fitting as it's my last week at my full time 8-5 job. It all ends on Friday and it makes me happy that I managed to design a spread that is the complete opposite of my feelings on the matter. I'm anxious, stressed, and constantly questioning whether or not I've made the right choice. But that's an existential crisis for another post.

Lounge Ready with RBX Active

One of the things I'm looking forward to most about working from home is the lounge wear. Every morning I'll get to choose between yoga pants and workout gear. Or blend a hybrid together of comfy yet cute. Yes please.

Up there as one of my favorite things to lounge around the house in are these RBX capri leggings. I know for a fact I'll be wearing them even more now that there is no such thing as 'business casual' for the Oh, Hello workforce. Although obviously made for a more active lifestyle, these babies are dang comfortable just to couch potato around in. Plus I know if I suddenly feel inspired to go for a run (pshhhhh not) then I'm all set. I was a little hesitant about the pattern at first as I avoid anything camo like the plague, but it's definitely grown on me. Throw on a black shirt and I'm good to go.

I find that capri active wear is a lot more flattering than shorts. Sometimes I'm not a huge fan of my thighs and having something that goes past my knees just makes me way more comfortable. Yet it's still flattering as it hugs the figure and shows off curves. All wins in my book.

And at least it's a step up from pajamas right?

#AKBwedding: Asking Bridesmaids & Dress Shopping

It's been quite the week for #AKBwedding progress and I'm excited to share what's been going on! On Tuesday I asked my last bridesmaid before asking my maid of honor on Thursday. I knew they were going to say yes, obviously, but it's still such a nerve racking experience regardless. It's such a relief to know that I have my four amazing bridesmaids (more info on them coming down the road) and can really start to focus on the dress shopping!

Just yesterday my mom, sister (aka bridesmaid) and I went on what we called a dress reconnaissance mission to really figure out my style of dress. I had a few ideas going in which I found myself definitely gravitating towards. Of course I also had to try on every type of dress they had just for fun. It was amazing to see just how in sync my mom, sister, and I were in style and fit. We narrowed it down to three possible options, but have plans for another dress mission next weekend.

The most exciting part of the exhausting 30 dress trying day? I now know for certain that I'm going to have a veil. Dress after dress I put on not really feeling any of them completely. I haven't had the this is the one feeling until I put the first veil on. It suddenly felt real and right. So at the very least I know a veil is a must!

I can't wait to try on more dresses next weekend and hopefully come away with the dress that makes this whole experience feel that much more real than it already does!!

How to Deal with Being Overwhelmed

Feeling overwhelmed is one of my specialties. I love to be busy, but I have a way of finding myself too busy and feeling the stress of the to do list. I've found a few ways to cope with the stress and how to deal with being overwhelmed.

  • Lists, lists, and more lists are your best friend. Make a master to do list. Make secondary lists. Break everything down to easy step by step points so you can clearly see what you need to accomplish.
  • Take it one thing at a time so you aren't making things worse by trying to see the big picture and the distance to the finish line. Start small with the little tasks. They'll add up quickly.
  • Think about five years from now and whether or not you stressing over things is going to affect you then. More times than not, what you're worried about now won't matter in the long run. Put things into perspective and refocus.
  • Know when to say no to things even though you may want to do them. Overbooking yourself won't do anyone any good. Put your attention to a few select things so you can do them better than spreading yourself thin.
  • Ask for help. Although this one can be hard for us busy bees, asking for help can make a huge difference.
  • Don't forget to eat, sleep, and take breaks. Working yourself sick won't help get you done any faster. Take care of your health so you'll be strong and in the right mindset to accomplish things.
  • Take a breather and calm down. You got this.

It's natural to get overwhelmed from time to time when things get stressful, but it's what you do in those situations that matter most. Understand your strengths and weaknesses, value your "me" time, and focus on the little things. You'll be done and not overwhelmed in no time!

What are your tips for dealing with being overwhelmed?

Erin Condren Haul + Giveaway

Erin Condren's website has a way of pulling you in even though you know you really don't need to buy any more planner supplies. I had been eyeing up the Address Book for quite a while and thought it was the perfect time to pick one up. We're getting into the guest list planning stages for our wedding and having a brand new address book to keep all our family and friends' addresses in seemed like a perfect excuse to place an order.

I also picked up something for you guys! I'm giving away one of the Erin Condren Launch Bundles which includes an awesome sticker book I use in a lot of my Plan with Me videos, pens, and a carrying pouch! The giveaway will run for one week and is open internationally for anyone over 18 or with parental consent! Good luck!

StriVectin Repair & Protect Moisturizer

StriVectin Repair & Protect Moisturizer

When it comes to skincare, I'm set in my ways. I always find myself drooling over new skincare products, but never actually giving them a test out. I'm trying to break that terrible habit of mine and the StriVectin Repair & Protect Moisturizer is the first step to skincare stubborness recovery.

I've tried a few different StriVectin products in the past from various subscription boxes, but the packaging always felt a bit wordy and clinical to me. This packaging however feels completely different. It still has the same "feel" as the other products when looking at it, but it's more fun and doesn't take itself as seriously. Plus anything pink and I'm already more interested.

With a lot of skincare I find it really hard to determine if it does exactly what it says on the tin, but I do really love this moisturizer for more than its claim to reduce signs of aging. It's a nice thick, moisturizing cream that still doesn't feel heavy on the skin. It blends and sinks in nicely and my skin feels hydrated, plump, and overall happy. Even if it's just good for those things, I'm a happy camper. I also love just how much product you get. A lot of time you'll spend your hard earned pennies on a skincare product that just doesn't last, but this little tub will be around for a long while.

Would I say it's better than my other favorite mosturizers? No, but it's also on par with them at the same time. I always feel like a makeup/skincare savant when I'm able to find another product I love just as much as my favorites. It's like building up an arsenal of bomb ass products that I can pick and choose from no matter my mood.

If you're in the market for a new mosturizer, definitely give this one a once over. Plus it's never too early to start thinking about signs of aging right?

Oh, Hello Subscription | July 2015

Although the shop is still closed until Monday, I thought I'd give everyone a peek at what the July subscription looks looked like as it contains a few new releases that will be going live on Monday!

For anyone new to the Oh, Hello Subscription world, subscriptions are $15 a month (with extra shipping for international buyers) and have mystery contents surrounding a particular theme. Subscriptions go live on the first of every month with limited quantities, so making sure you are up and at 'em by 9 AM EST is super important in order to snag one (since it's a pretty dang good deal). There have been subscriptions in the past where I've teamed up with other planner related shops, but it's not always guaranteed. It's just a fun little surprise every now and again when subscribers receive something from another shop too!

This month's theme was "Soak up the Rays" and leaned towards all things summer. I really like the mixture of functional and cute stickers, but of course I'm partial to the geocaching mini set. The appointment stickers have already been a huge hit and they haven't even been listed yet!

Next month's theme is "Let's Get Organized" and I'm incredibly excited for some of the new releases that are going to be coming in that set!

Plan with Me | Jungle Tales Theme

Anything that has animals on it is just going to be good. This week's Plan with Me spread turned out much better that I expected despite some serious rambling on my part. It's so easy to get yourself into a planner routine and rarely shake yourself from it, so I like to try and switch things up once in a while. A lot of my planning methods stay the same, but switching up a few things here or there can really change the feel and look of a spread!

I've also been filming more on my lunch breaks rather than on the weekends since we've been so busy lately. I feel like I get a different result depending on what day I do my layouts. If they're on Sundays, it's all very casual and sparse, but Monday or Tuesday means I'm in getting into the thick of the week and the layouts or fuller with more things to do. Just an interesting thing I realized the other day that's neither here nor there...

What layout did you do this week? What do you think of mine?

Why Graduate School Isn't For Everyone

Growing up I thought for sure I'd go to graduate school. Undergrad was never a question, but I always had my sights set higher anyway. It just seemed like something I was meant to do, but now I'm realizing it was something I was supposed to do. And after a few semesters of classes, I'm taking an indefinite break from graduate school. Graduate school isn't for everyone, and it's not necessarily meant to be.

I think the hardest thing for me to wrap my head around is the idea that I don't really need graduate school for what I want to do with my life. There are plenty of career paths and jobs that a graduate degree makes perfect sense for, but I've learned more in the past ten months on my own than I would ever learn in a classroom. My passion is social media. It's now also my business and online presence. These aren't something that can be taught in a classroom. Sure theories and "best practices" are important, but I much rather blaze my own trail than sit in a classroom reading about other people who have.

And that's a scary thing to admit. I come from a family in strong support of education, yet I feel myself pulling away from education in the traditional sense. It's a terrifying feeling as I know I'm veering off the path of well-intention my family and myself have laid out before me, but it's also liberating to know that I'm taking a different direction for myself. There are moments in your life when you just do something for yourself and I think accepting that graduate school isn't right for me is one of them.

I'm by no means advocating for you to just skip post-graduate education for the hell of it or because I've said it's ok. Honestly I wish I did feel that pull to keep on going and collect degree after degree like I felt growing up. Yet I find that my time and energy could best serve me else where, and that's ok too. The biggest thing I want people to take away from this is that it's ok to do something different from what you originally thought you'd be doing. Sure not everyone will agree with the decision, but here's hoping you'll find support from friends and family to make the process easier.

Ultimately, take the time to figure out what you want to do with your time, money, and energy. It's so easy to get caught up in what everyone else wants or expects from you, but at the end of the day it's your life and your choice. I choose "the real world" over the walls of a classroom. What's your choice?

xoxo Kayla

Ipsy Glam Bag | June 2015

I swear every other month Ipsy is just meh. What is it about subscriptions that they can't just kill it every single month? Although I'm not over the moon about this month's "Swim into Beauty" Glambag, there are still a couple of products I really enjoyed. and thought I'd share with you all anyway!

I've always had a thing for OFRA products ever since I first discovered them thanks to Ipsy. The brand is one of those obscure yet awesome ones that definitely deserve a looksie. I love their eyeliners and was super excited to see a turquoise one. Blues are definitely not a color I gravitate towards in makeup, but whenever I get a blue eyeliner I feel like I'm about to start some serious experimentation and trying new things. It's creamy, long lasting, and a great all around eyeliner range.

The other product in the glam bag I was fairly jazzed over is the La Vanila Body Butter. I'm a sucker for body butters and hand creams so the more the merrier in my book. It smells delicious, is thick and creamy in a good way, and really hydrates the skin. Ticks all the boxes.

The rest of the products were just alright. I must admit I'm tired of constantly seeing the Smashbox Photo Finish primer as it's too silicon feeling for my tastes. I was excited to see a Formula X nail polish, but the color is just not my cup of tea. and the tre'StiQue Mini Shadow Crayon was just alright.

I'm definitely still going to stick with Ipsy, but there must be a theory or something out there that can explain why every other month just can't compare to the one before...

Do you subscribe to Ipsy? What did you think of your Glambag in June?

L'Oréal Paris Smooth Intense Ultimate Straight

L'Oréal Paris Smooth Intense Ultimate Straight

**I received these products from Influenster for testing purposes

It's been ages since I've washed my hair with anything other than the OGX Thick & Full Biotin and Collagen Shampoo, but a switch every once in a while is always in order. L'Oréal's gorgeous rose gold packaging arrived at my doorstep at the perfect time. Although my hair is naturally straight, I wanted to see just how smooth and intense it could get with the Ultimate Straight Line.

Right off the bat I'll tell you that you don't need as many products as the line provides you. I'm always in favor of the less is more mentality when it comes to hair and too many products can really weigh you down. Yet beyond the number of products the line makes you feel like you need, this collection is amazing. They smell amazing, but I can't quite put my finger on exactly what the scent is. Grapefruit? Candy? It's delicious either way and the shampoo builds up into a nice lather.

I also really enjoyed the Straight Perfecting Balm. It worked more as a heat protectant for me than anything else, but my hair felt and looked shinier and smoother after use. No stray hairs flying all over the place like usual.

My hair felt clean after usage (always a good sign), but a little too flat for my liking. It's a hard balance to create a straightening product, that also still gives you volume and body. This range just couldn't do that for me. I find that volumizing shampoo work a lot better on my hair type than ones that boast about straight hair. I'm sure if your hair isn't as straight as mine this would be a great line to try, but for us straight hair girls it leaves me wanting more volume and grit.

It's definitely an affordable range to check out if you're in the market for some straightening gems, but straight hair girls should stay away in favor of volume and texture.

xoxo Kayla
