The Hardest Thing About Owning Your Own Business

The Hardest Thing About Owning Your Own Business

First off, I never thought in a million years I would be owning my own business. When I first started dating Alex, the idea of someone owning a business became more realistic, but definitely not for me. He's the entrepreneur and the one to take the risks. He's also the one who encouraged me to start Oh, Hello Stationery eight months ago. And now here we are; me with my own business.

There are definitely tons of really difficult parts about owning a business I could have never imagined and really wish I would have known ahead of time, Yet there's one thing in particular that is the hardest of all for me: letting go of complete control.

I'm a very organized, self-reliant person when it comes to projects and things I'm passionate about, yet I wouldn't be able to keep Oh, Hello open if I didn't let others help me. As most of you know, I work a full time job, go to graduate school, and run this blog and my YouTube channel on top of operating the business. There just isn't enough hours in the day sometimes and suddenly you realize just how much you can't do this on your own.

Alex quit his mediocre full time job early this year to run the operations aspect of Oh, Hello full time while I kept my great day job with amazing benefits. I've had to learn that "my baby" is ours and to understand that I can't do everything. It's been interesting giving up the control of certain aspects of the business and having to have completely trust in him when I'm not there. It's been really hard for me to do, but has made our business a million times better.

Another aspect of letting go of complete control is allowing his visions of the business blend together with mine. We wouldn't be successful if I constantly dictated how I wanted things to go and wasn't open to his input and ideas. It's his input that made Oh, Hello a reality; he deserves all the input he wants. But at the same time it's really difficult for me to collaborate on so many aspects. I'm not very good at going with the flow and his personality strives on spontaneous decisions that very often end amazingly well. We're two very different people, but that's why I fell in love with him and why I am starting to learn to let go.

Owning your own business can be a scary thing, but doing it completely on your own just so you can make all the decisions is even scarier. Letting go of complete control may not be easy for you like me, but it's freeing and always your business to become something bigger than yourself. It's not easy, but it's worth it.

What's the hardest thing about owning your own business?

xoxo Kayla
