What I Look for in a Beauty Blog

Beauty blogs are a dime a dozen these days and reading them is by far my favorite past time. I browse new blogs daily and have noticed that there are some specific qualities I look for in a blog before I hit that "follow" button.

1. Good photography
Above all else a blog's photography is the most important factor in determining whether or not I'll follow a blog. If the photos are blurry, dark, or grainy I'm instantly not interested in reading any posts, regardless of how insightful they may be. Unfortunately photography can be the hardest part about maintaining a blog. There's tons to learn and lighting can be unpredictable. However it can make or break a blog in my book.

2. Frequent Posting
I pride myself in posting nearly every day on this blog (the weekends sometimes get me) so frequent posting is definitely an important thing for me. I'm not saying it has to be daily, but a post every two weeks or so making excuses for the lack of posts just doesn't do it for me.

3. Engaging/Unique Posts
There's only so many times someone can read a swatch post about the new Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette. Unique posts are a must for me. I don't mind the traditional, usual posts, but having a series that's unique to your blog is definitely a plus. Posts that talk about products that aren't all over the blogosphere also perk my interest. It's like I'm being let in on a secret about a product others haven't heard about yet!

4. Responds to Comments
Nothing's worse than leaving a comment and never hearing anything from the blogger. It doesn't make me want to keep reading the blog if the writer doesn't have enough time to respond to their readers. If a reader takes the time to leave a comment that's a HUGE deal to me! Responding to comments is a really nice gesture that you value your readers not just for their views.

5. Style and voice
One thing I really love about reading beauty blogs is the different personalities that come out with each blog. Finding your style and voice for your blog is incredibly important but also sometimes really challenging. It's easy to want to get swept up and follow big named bloggers style of posting, but you have to find what works for you! Be yourself!

What sorts of things do you look for when finding new blogs to follow?

xoxo Kayla

  1. I'd definitely agree to all of these - particularly the aesthetics of a blog but also how the writer responds. I hate blogs with writers who do not respond, it's rude and arrogant </3

    1. I personally LOVE responding to comments! It's a great way to get to know fellow bloggers and understand what your audience is interested in!

  2. I like this post idea! Those are all the things I look for in a blog...and the pictures need to be big. If a blog has teeny little pics I just close it. And YES! I'm so beyond tired of reading Naked 3 palette reviews. There's such thing as posting timely. If you got Naked 3 right at it's release, yes by all means review it so people can see if it's worth it or not. By this point, everyone's seen at least 10 reviews, so yea...no need to post it. Things need to be in a timely manner :)

    1. Small photos make me SO sad! A huge part of beauty blogging is SHOWING things...not just writing!

  3. The problem with responding to comments on Blogger is that Blogger doesn't make any notification that the poster responded to you, unlike WordPress does (or has, during my experience of using it). Blogger really needs to work on that 'cos when we (probably) comment on so many blogs a day, it's hard to keep track of what we did comment on.

  5. I really enjoyed this post. I agree with so much of this as well (I love nice photos and products I have never heard of!). It was particularly useful as I've only just started my own blog, so feel like I need to find my own style/voice, and definitely need to work on my photos. x

    1. I'm really glad everyone is liking this post! I definitely think people don't share enough WHY they follow certain blogs over others! I'm sure your blog will just get better and better!

  6. I look for similar things to you - big clear photography is a must for me and a unique way of writing. I also like bloggers who are always up for a chat - a lot of my favourite bloggers are those who I talk to regularly on twitter!

  7. I couldn't agree more with the photo point on here. I started off using my iPhone, but I would never use something blurry from it. Then upgraded to a compact camera and now I use a DSLR. I hate seeing a photo that's obviously had no thought or care put into it.

    1. One of my favorite things about the photography aspect of a beauty blog is that you can really start to see a person's personality come out. Everyone edits and frames their shots differently!

  9. This is a really good post, I enjoyed reading it! I try to stick to all of these things when writing my blog, but sometimes it's easier said than done (e.g.frequent posting)... Sometimes life gets in the way! My top two things would have to be good photography, and good writing style.. x
